All early people, no matter where they lived, were hunters and gatherers. Eventually, however, the people in different parts of the world developed their own cultures. A culture is a unique way of life that sets a group apart from others. As clans merged and grew in size, their society changed. In a clan with only 20 members, everyone did similar tasks. In larger clans of 50 to 100 members, a division of labor began. Different members did different tasks based on their abilities and the clan's needs. Each person in these larger clans took on a role, a part he or she played to help society.
